DEA Training - get the ABBE Diploma

No abstract theory. Just relevant know-how
Our training courses are lively, stretching and structured around clear learning objectives. Every tutor is hand-picked; many are recognised industry leaders. All are passionate about best practice in their professional speciality.

The ABBE Level 3 Diploma in Domestic Energy Assessment is technically demanding. You will need to convince your VRQ Assessor that you have the skills, knowledge and understanding to deliver accurate energy ratings, provide recommendations for improvement, and to do so with high levels of regard for health and safety and customer satisfaction.

All EPCs issued as part of the HIP will be part of an accreditation scheme that will impose a rigorous quality assurance standard. A sample of each DEA’s EPCs will be reassessed to check for accuracy. As such, DEAs will have to work to the very highest standards.

We offer three DEA training and assessment packages to suit the experience of the candidate. They are based around the following four training components, each of which lasts for 2 days. Once you join a programme, each component is delivered in roughly two-week intervals. Training is delivered in Milton Keynes (predominantly at our dedicated training suite at the National Energy Centre) and you can choose to come on either a weekday or a weekend.

Component 1 (Required for all candidates) - 2 days of lectures and practical workshops

Introduces you to units 1 and 2 of the National Occupational Standards and provides you with practical information on how you can upload evidence of compliance.  Our experience with assessing 1,400 Home Inspectors is that this is absolutely essential, and without practical guidance most candidates find it very difficult to progress.

What you will learn and achieve:

  • Understand the requirements of Units 1 and 2
  • Know what evidence is
  • Know where to find and generate evidence
  • How to upload evidence, examples of evidence required against each unit point, includes practical session on writing a personal statement
  • Health & Safety of yourself and others
  • Practice at undertaking and writing up risk assessments
  • Demonstration of the EPC online software, which you will have access to

Component 2  (Optional for experienced practitioners) - 2 days of lectures and practical exercises

Provides a broad understanding of basic construction theory, thermal theory and the principles of energy efficiency in residential properties.

What you will learn and achieve:

  • How a property is constructed, including explaining common terminology
  • How to identify the age of a property taking into account geographical regions
  • Building regulations and age
  • Practical exercises on identifying age
  • Identifying basic thermal properties such as cavity walls, loft insulation, etc
  • Space and domestic hot water heating systems and their controls

Component 3  (Optional for experienced practitioners with extensive experience of energy rating) - 2 days of small-group workshops and house visits

Limited to just 15 participants, this component is delivered via interactive workshops with a lot of emphasis placed on surveying real houses, using the software and actually producing  EPCs.

What you will learn and achieve:

  • Understand the RDSAP conventions
  • Measure and record the dimensions of the property accurately
  • Correctly identify elements of construction and record their description
  • Identify and record the health and safety risks associated with the property, its occupants and yourself
  • Input data into online software and produce EPCs
  • How to provide recommendations for improvement measures

Component 4 (Required for all candidates) - 2 days of small interactive workshops, and an accompanied survey

Consolidates your knowledge and provides additional skills such as non-standard properties, unusual features and building integrated renewable energy technology, so that you can undertake assessments with confidence.

What you will learn and achieve:

  • How to identify and deal with non-standard constructions and unusual property features
  • How to identify and deal with non-standard space and hot water heating systems
  • Identifying and recommending building integrated renewable energy technologies such as photovoltaic panels and solar water heating
  • Confidence in the RDSAP conventions and all aspects of being a Domestic Energy Assessor
  • Complete your accompanied inspection, required as part of the VRQ assessment

The NHER's DEA training programme does not cut any corners and will ensure that you deliver Energy Performance Certificates with absolute confidence.
