DEA Assessment - meet the National Occupational Standards

Assessment  – making it easy – saving you time
Our assessment centre is always open.  Evidence is simply uploaded via your PC (either at home or in the office) and is securely stored by us. Your VRQ assessor gets access to the information instantaneously, and any feedback from the VRQ assessor can be easily relayed back to you.

Because the assessment centre is online, it is always open, meaning that you can upload evidence at any time. You will be uploading large files, so broadband internet access is a must.

About the Qualification

The ABBE Level 3 Diploma in Domestic Energy Assessment is a brand new qualification that became available in December 2006. It is a vocationally related qualification (VRQ), which is competence-based and achieved through a process of assessment and examination. The competences required are defined in the National Occupational Standards (NOS).

The National Occupational Standards

The latest version of the NOS can be downloaded by clicking here.

In summary, the standards are divided into 5 modules:

  1. Working in an effective and professional manner:
    • Develop and maintain effective working relationships
    • Manage your own time and resources
    • Develop yourself to improve performance
    • Conduct your work in a professional and ethical manner
  2. Contribute to the safety and security of people and property:
    • Contribute to the maintenance of health and safety
    • Contribute to the safety of self, colleagues and clients
    • Contribute to the safety of property
    • Contribute to the security of information
  3. Prepare for energy assessment:
    • Agree and confirm instructions to undertake an energy assessment
    • Make enquiries on relevant matters relating to the property
  4. Undertake energy inspections:
    • Inspect property to determine energy performance
    • Make records of inspection findings
  5. Produce and explain EPCs:
    • Produce EPCs
    • Issue EPCs and explain their contents

What does an assessment centre do?

The assessment centre ensures that each candidate has the required level of knowledge and skills to gain the qualification. It will not be possible to gain the qualification simply by taking a one or two day training course in RDSAP (the energy survey methodology for existing dwellings).
The role of the assessment centre is to:

  • Help you build up an evidence portfolio that demonstrates you can meet every aspect of the NOS
  • Allocate you an assessor who will review your evidence portfolio and sign it off as meeting the NOS criteria
  • Direct you towards any additional training you may need
  • Prepare you for the external exam, set by the awarding body ABBE

Energy Performance Certificate software

The NHER has developed an online software service for producing EPCs, which means that you will be able to access it wherever you are. It also means that we can update it instantly with new features and keep it in line with changes to the energy rating methodology (which we are developing with others). The software builds on the established market leading products of the NHER and SAVA.

Whilst our centre is online, there is human contact too!

You will be allocated two named VRQ assessors. One assessor will determine your competence in the business and interpersonal skills described in the NOS Units 1 and 2. The other assessor will determine competence in the technical requirements of preparing, inspecting for and completing an EPC (NOS Units 3, 4 and 5).

In addition, the Assessment Support Team has responsibility for all matters relating to the successful delivery of the training and assessment programme. The team will help you to understand the process and succeed in the distance learning. The advisors will help you to stay on course to finish by June 2007 by monitoring your progress, coordinating your assessment activities and arranging your training in Milton Keynes.

Pass the external exam with confidence

The external exam is set by ABBE, the awarding body, and is the last hurdle before the Domestic Energy Assessor Diploma is awarded. Our assessment centre includes a self test facility, designed to help you evaluate your own level of knowledge in each of the areas of competence covered by the Diploma. The self tests are not compulsory and do not form part of the assessment process, but they will help you to identify areas where knowledge and understanding need to be improved to pass the exam.
